1045 Steel: A Common Medium-Carbon Option

1045 Steel: The "Versatile Player" Among Medium-Carbon Steels

1045 steel is a non-alloy medium-carbon steel compliant with ASTM A29/A29M standards. The "10" indicates the non-alloy steel category, while the last two digits "45" represent a carbon content of approximately 0.45% . It is one of the most widely used medium-carbon steels in industrial applications.

Its core properties are well-balanced: tensile strength ranges from about 570-700MPa, yield strength around 330MPa. After quenching and tempering, its strength can be enhanced to 600-800MPa with hardness reaching HRC28-32, while maintaining moderate toughness, avoiding the brittleness defect of high-carbon steels. It has good machinability, capable of conventional cutting processes like turning, milling, and drilling, as well as forging. With stable response to heat treatment, it is a typical representative of "ease of processing + strengthenability".

Its application scenarios are highly focused on mechanical manufacturing: due to its well-matched strength and toughness, it is often used as the base material for key components such as shafts (e.g., motor shafts, machine tool spindles), gears, connecting rods, hydraulic cylinders, and bolts. It can also be used for tooling parts like mold plates and fixtures. Additionally, surface hardness can be further improved through surface quenching to meet wear resistance requirements.
